The Wood

The wood used by Catkin Loop is collected in the spring when the bark is easy to peel. All trees are hand-peeled so the wood is a natural smooth surface without any knife marks. When log rounds dry, the wood shrinks and will often form cracks. This is called checking and many of the log rounds used in the log furniture will have some checking. The strength and integrity of the log furniture is not affected by this cracking and it should be seen as just part of the natural appearance of furniture.

Log Wood Finishes

Most Catkin Loop log and live edge furniture is coated with a natural finish to add depth and warmth to the colour of the wood and highlights the grain. Pieces can be stained to add greater detail to the grain or to match other furniture, and a range of stain colours are available. All furniture is then finished with a hard, protective clear coat to make the furniture durable. For clients who prefer a wood oil finish, Tung oil is also available. While Tung oil is not a highly durable finish, it is easy to reapply if the furniture is marked or scratched.

Rustic furniture can be stained or given a natural finish,
and on upholstered log furniture the fabric can be leather or cloth.
